Design notes
Design goals
The internal service header was developed as a standard alternative to the GOV.UK header component for internal services, which can’t use the crown logo or GDS Transport font.
What we did
This component was developed with a working group. The working group reviewed six existing header components already in use across DWP services and agreed on a preferred design.
There was some discussion around whether the service name should be a link or not. We agreed that as this is standard behaviour in the GOV.UK component the functionality should be included but without mandating a specific link target.
Some examples of the header include action items such as ‘Sign out’ or navigation links to other parts of a service. We decided to include these as variations on the standard component, along with guidance on how to use them properly.
We agreed to publish the component after code refactoring and accessibility testing.
